Dancing With the Devil

Pastor Wes at my old church (Living Tower Church, Aurora, CO) always used to say: "Be careful when you dance with the devil, he always leads." The meaning was clear to us who are saved that you mustn't ever trifle with sin in your life. Sin will take you further than you want to go and keep you there far longer than you want to be there.

So, I was reading yesterday and started to find hints of what GE has been up to (General Electric). GE is one of the largest corporations in America, traditionally a leader in technology as well as leadership development. In the days when I went to business school, there were numerous case studies using Jack Welch and his leadership principles at GE. Today, that company is run by a guy named Jeffery Immelt. President Obama has taken and appointed this fellow to head the National Employment Task Force (or something like that, the name is not really important). Putting folks back to work in this country is a very important item for everyone - including me.

So, I was a bit concerned when President Obama appointed this guy to the task force on employment because his track record shows that he's never created any jobs at GE, rather he has down-sized domestic operations in the US and exported jobs abroad. Now, I read that GE is making deals with the Chinese to produce avionics (high tech stuff and critical to our defense industry by the way!) for their aircraft industry. WHAT THE HECK?

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!

Read the Washington Post article

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/ge-all-in-on-aviation-deal-with-china/2011/07/17/gIQAgPmTXJ_story.html

That should give you the chills - at least if you have any common sense! The Chinese will begin cloning that technology in NO TIME. The Chinese have no principles, they do not follow "The rule of law" as other countries do. Take, e.g., Apple and their experience in China. How many "unauthorized" Apple stores are there in China, and just what is it they are selling (unauthorized iPhones)?

There are a ton of other articles where it is reported that (somehow) GE's deals with the Chinese will "safeguard jobs in the US." This is FANTASY! It's LUNACY! It's IDIOTIC!

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f14afc34-2347-11e0-b6a3-00144feab49a.html#axzz1Vy8ZZwrw

Here's an article that says GE is "Arming China to compete with Boeing!"

http://www.dailyfinance.com/2011/01/18/is-ge-arming-china-to-compete-with-america/

I am just really upset about it and I hope I sound like it. This is just outrageous, and I think that Mr. Immelt should be fired over this and President Obama impeached! Imagine the nerve of these guys - taking America apart piece by piece and selling it to the Chinese! I really don't care if they want to "Dance with the devil" but I do care that they are exporting jobs, technology, American "Know how" and so on to another country that has no interest in our country whatsoever except to drain every drop of wealth that they can and then charge us interest on our Government bonds.

Hooray for Governor Perry!

The Response

I call it “Courageous” that Governor Perry of Texas is asking for Americans to get down on their knees and pray.  Prayer works, in spite of what anybody else says.  It works because God is real, and He cares about each and every one of us.

On the other hand, I’m not sure God can bless our nation any longer as we have sacrificed over 30M babies on the altar of “Choice”.

America is in deep trouble, and it has everything to do with people who think we need to separate church and state.  Freedom, real freedom, only comes in living under a loving God.  Living under any other belief system leads to enslavement to idolatry, especially the idol of “Choice” I mentioned above.  The other idols include things like evolution and homosexuality, materialism and lust.  But, what we must remember is that sin is sin, and all mankind is guilty!

There is only one solution:  Jesus.

I say it again, HOORAY for Governor Perry for being so courageous to take this important step at a critical time in our nation’s history!

God bless America.

Being "Entitled"

OK, so this hit me this morning when I woke up.  Or maybe it was last night, and I’m remembering it again just now.  The real scary thing about the way our government is operating is that all the entitlement programs foster dependency in entire groups of people.  What struck me is this:  The first step towards enslaving people is to make them dependent on something.

The British did this in China when they went in there with boatloads of Opium.  They wrecked an entire country for the sake of their Tea trade.  I heard, in a recent conversation with an Iranian fellow, that the British are still using those same tactics.  This fellow’s father told how the British had come into his village in Iran with truckloads of Opium, and they told the people that if they smoked it, that they’d come back and buy the resin / residue from their pipes from them.  Initially they gave the Opium to the people for free.  Later they started charging for the Opium, and they drained all the wealth from these poor peasants, and ruined entire regions of Iran, changed the people from prosperous farmers to dependent drug addicts.  The same thing has happened in the past few years in Afghanistan, and I needn’t tell you who is getting the people to grow Opium over there.

Is that behavior any different from our government and its “entitlement” programs?  I speak with some knowledge having lived off unemployment for more than a couple years.  We gave it up after coming to California, and I have to tell you I really hope I never have to go back onto unemployment again!  It’s just like welfare, it fosters dependency, and it creates a mindset of hopelessness.  When you are hungry you will go out and look hard for a job, for work, you’ll make work!  It’s trials that grow us, not handouts from a government that is seeking to enslave us.  My belief is that the Democrats are moving us ever closer to a totalitarian state, because if you can make the people dependent, then you can enslave them.  If you can enslave them, then you can make them do whatever you want.  That’s the real issue with entitlement programs.

Navy Week!

Gads – I forgot what a ZOO Los Angeles is for any type of “free event.” On the way down to San Pedro, I was reminding Cheryl how awful it is to try to get to any type of free outdoor event, concerts in the park and so forth. They are lots of fun, but given the number of folks, who, like us are looking for “free” or certainly cheap entertainment, are trying desperately to get to these types of cultural events, life can be very difficult. Even Navy Week at Los Angeles Harbor (San Pedro) was mobbed!

We got there at 10:10a – only 10 minutes after the tours were due to start for the Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln. Guess what? It was already over a 2hr wait to get into the line to see the ship! You had to go through the security screening checkpoint, and then you had to ride the little buses they were operating to get through the security checkpoint on the dock. They said yesterday (Wednesday) they were expecting about 10,000 folks to come down for the tour, they had over 50,000 people show up! They had to close everything down early so they could finish giving out tours to the folks they had in line!

I guess like all things in LA, especially the free ones, you had better get there early and be prepared to wait in line for a long time! As I said earlier, it tends to be that way for all activities here in LA, especially the free cultural events, concerts in the park, Shakespeare in the park, outdoor movies and so on and so forth. Even the paid events are crowded, though not so badly these days it seems. Attendance is down at Dodgers games, they are near the bottom of the league and are in financial distress, so who wants to support them? I guess only the diehard baseball fans. We can’t even afford tickets for the cheap seats anymore!

We met folks who, like us, can’t afford to go out to paid entertainment anymore. Their austerity budget allowed them out about twice a month to McD’s and BK. But, on the bright side of things, we met many Veterans today, some Navy, some Coast Guard, one Air Force like Cheryl! We swapped some good stories, and we got some nice photos of mighty “Abe” from across the bay. We gave up on the tour, and decided to find a nice spot on Cabrillo Beach where we could get some great photos. We found a spot at the Boy Scouts Camp across the harbor. We sat there for some time talking with a nice couple, and we pointed a few other folks to the wonderful photo-op place as well.

Afterwards, Cheryl and I went and strolled Pt. Fermin Park, below Ft. McArthur Park in San Pedro, and then we visited the Wayfarer’s Chapel (aka the Glass Church or Glass Chapel). There was a wedding going on there, so we thanked God for the day, a GORGEOUS day, and prayed for our friends who got on a plane today headed for Vietnam. As in all things, you gotta learn to “Flex and roll” baby, flex and roll. It wound up being just a nice slow day for Cheryl and I since we decided not to bother with the long lines and crowds, rather we just did our own thing. A bit different from how things used to be in Colorado, but still enjoyable for us. As long as we’re together and with Jesus in charge!

Craig Huey Town Hall - El Segundo

Cheryl and I showed up last night at the El Segundo Public Library for the monthly meeting of California Republican Assembly, and we were pleased to discover that it had been scheduled as a "Town Hall" meeting with Craig Huey!  Craig is our local Tea Party candidate running for Congressional District 36 in the runoff election next month (July 12) against Janice Hahn.

There were several interesting points in the discussion.

1. Craig had scheduled a "debate" with Ms. Hahn last week that she cancelled.

2. Craig had his "points of discussion" very well organized, and his material was very thorough and the research was excellent.

3. Craig has written a book (I'm going to try to find it) on economics.

4. The scariest part of all the "Obamanomics" that is going on is the proposed budget and the new "creative" ways the liberals are using to patch up gaps in spending.  They are planning to take away tax-deductions for charitable gifts, and 401k and IRA deductions.  Gads!  First, President Obama gets a little, then he wants it all!  Is this guy really trying to ruin our country?

5. President Obama was pressing hard for an Internet "Kill switch."  Know what that is?  Think Egypt and Syria and Tunisia, and CHINA!  Big brother wants to be able to turn your internet OFF!  Did you hear that?

6. Craig wants us to reign in the Federal Reserve.  Fiscal policies are just not working and that organization is out of control.

I'm going to email Huey HQ and see if they'll post that presentation that Craig had - it should be well worth the effort of going through again.

Craig Huey For Congress!

Hey all!

I was so pleasantly surprised recently and found myself praising God for His faithfulness when Craig Huey, a GOP long shot in the special election here in CA for the vacant Congressional seat, made it to a runoff election with Janice Hahn – a CAREER politician! Praise God for getting Craig this far, and for making it possible for him to compete against somebody who does this stuff for a living, maybe there’s hope for Christian - conservatives yet!

Personally – I’d love to see Craig win and the career politician go down in flames! Janice Hahn is a Democrat, a liberal, and a staunch supporter of BIG government and liberal ideals. We need her to be defeated Lord – please help us! By Your grace Jesus.

Amen.

Ideas For Haiti - Reforestation & Rebuilding

A few months back, my brother-in-law Rod challenged me to stop talking about all the problems in Haiti and to start coming up with solutions. We all like lists, so let me make a "Top 7 Ideas For Haiti" list. Along with each idea, I will flesh out a small portion of the discussion on that idea.
  • First and foremost, any program that is to take place must benefit Haitians. That may sound obvious, but there are a great many programs around that sound great but have little "on the ground" impact for locals in whatever country you are talking about. When it comes to a poverty stricken nation such as Haiti, where the problems are myriad, this point demands that local Haitians become involved in the program, and in fact recruited and trained. I will cite two excellent examples in this respect, the first is a program called the Eden Reforestation Project and the second is Singing Rooster Coffee.
  • Another very difficult problem to solve in Haiti will be the overpopulation, the overcrowding in cities, and the high unemployment rate. Any project that is to be of benefit to Haitians (as per #1 above) must employ a good amount of local labor. It is imperative to use good employment practices as well, and to find decent reliable local workers who can take over and manage the project.
  • Any project undertaken in Haiti must be able to be cloned easily as soon as the first lessons are learned, and the local population can be taught to become "Teachers of teachers." One of the key difficulties in this point is that most Haitians cannot read or write. Projects such as International Child Care Ministries (part of the Free Methodist Church World Missions organization) are working on the illiteracy problem, starting from with the youngest children in Haiti, but the impact is limited. To become self-sustaining, any project must address the education of Haitians in order to best prepare them to become self-sustaining managers as well as being able to run and expand their own businesses.
  • Following the people issues in Haiti, and coming in very close to those is the deforestation of the island. No project will succeed in Haiti unless it addresses this key problem. Several aid programs have been instituted in the past 40-50 years in Haiti, where food aid was given in exchange for establishment of labor pools to work in the equivalent of a Haitian "Maquiladora" industry. Much of this labor has been dedicated to assembly of cheap shoes and other textiles. All the raw materials are imported and the assembly takes place in Port-Au-Prince and then the goods are exported from there with the "Made in Haiti" label proudly displayed. The problem with this approach is as I have pointed out before, the drain on labor and the cost to farmers is tremendous, resulting in markets flooded with cheap labor willing to work for $1-2 a day, and the farmers not being able to produce crops that can keep up with the cheap prices of food encountered in the cities, thus falling Haitian food production over the past 50 years. The deforestation issue intersects labor and farming in the area of food consumption (primarily). Haiti has never shifted the cooking method of the local population from charcoal to something more sustainable. The Dominican Republic made a huge push in the 1960's to convert the population from using charcoal to natural gas for cooking, and it's been very successful. Thus, on one side of the island of Hispaniola there are trees (in the DR) and on the other side of the island there are no trees. Over 98% of Haiti has been deforested (mainly since 1950) - where Haiti was once known as "The Jewel of the Caribbean!" Any program that is to be of benefit to Haiti should address how food is cooked, as well as energy production and distribution.
  • Another key difficulty in Haiti is the lack of Government services. Haiti, being basically a third world country is run nearly exclusively by the Government. This includes Military, Police, Energy, Water, Sanitation as well as roads and other types of communication. One thing that I noticed down there was that there are cellular phone companies on the island, and all the people are desperate to have phones. A phone can mean a lifeline to other resources presumably, that includes jobs, food and basic survival in other words. While it's not the job of any particular project to help the Haitian Government deal with all the issues they face in repairing and improving basic services, any project should seek to prove that it will at least not harm those services and will in fact work within the framework of local Haitian Government to impact the services. This can be as simple as being responsible taxpayers, and as another example, helping build and improve roads that lead to outlying areas on the island.
  • Synergy. Plain and simple, no project is going to succeed without forming a network among other projects. Forming connections between business is valuable for pooling resources, sharing ideas and helping support one another when times are difficult. Again, this may be obvious to some, and it is the source of the notion of "The Mall" in this country, but that is of benefit mainly to retailers. Similar ideas apply to farmers, however, especially small growers and producers.
  • Lastly, I will just add one of my favorite quotes: "If you give a man a fish, you've fed him for a day. If you teach him to fish, you've fed him for a lifetime." It's a point that I will make again and again that we need to teach people to fish, not just give them fish! All the aid programs in the world may keep people alive, but it leads to an "Entitlement mindset" in my opinion, and doesn't give people basic human dignity nor does it even treat them with respect. We must empower Haitians to take over their own island and make something good out of it. From the ashes can come a rebirth!
I hope you all will read this and make comments. This is not an autocracy! I relish hearing from others, getting new ideas, filling my areas where I have no knowledge. I'm always doing research and reading history. So help me out!

Dragon Breath

This is too cool. Cheryl and I went down to the pier yesterday and while we were there, I came up with this brand new theory.  It’s totally silly of course, but also quite probable.  For hundreds, if not thousands of years, men have told legends of “Fire-breathing monsters” and in some cases we call those “Dragons.”  While The Bible does not speak directly of “Dragons” it does speak of “Leviathan” and “Behemoth” and other giant beasts, some of which can only be what we now know as “Dinosaurs.”  The Bible further speaks of those beasts breathing fire, so I, for one, am inclined to believe that somehow or other, fire came out of their mouths, or seemed to somehow.

Since I became a Christian later in life, I grew up with “Evolution” and learned that it was “Fact.”  However, I now know differently, that evolution as it’s taught in schools is neither fact, nor is it even a good theory, but rather a set of theories that depend on some mighty improbable assumptions.  See my earlier blog posting on Evolution for more information on this important topic.  Anyhow, I don’t remember quite what started us thinking on the subject of dragons yesterday. We frequently have these discussions that take on “Free Association” qualities.  Maybe it’s me, or Cheryl, or both of us are a bit ADD, we’re not quite sure.

So, we’re talking and all of a sudden, out of the blue, I realized something quite important.  Fact:  There were once large lizards, what we have come to call “Dinosaurs” running around this planet.  Assumptions are part of this theory so let’s go over those now.  Around 1900, there were still specimens of Komodo Dragon measuring in excess of 20′ length.  Today, you are hard-pressed to come up with a 12′ specimen.  That’s just sort of an aside for this discussion, but I want to use it for argument’s sake to say that Dinosaurs were really just large lizards that kept growing for perhaps hundreds of years (because reptiles will continue growing as long as they live in most cases).  Given the right conditions, that’s not too difficult to imagine.

Anyhow, so we have these large lizards, as large as 80′ or maybe even 100′ in length running around.  My guess would be that meat-eaters, despite being wildly popular with scientists and children, were probably quite rare.  I think my idea came from a discussion we had with our neighbor recently about atmospheric methane more than anywhere else.  You see, we were talking and she (my neighbor) was arguing the “Global Warming” case, and I was pointing out that the theory of Global Warming was out of favor with many NASA and NOAA scientists, and I had personally never subscribed to it.  Instead today, the new theory about the Earth’s Magnetic Field influence on weather (what Farmer’s Almanac has always tracked in terms of “Sun Spots”) is much more plausible.  She argued that the release of methane into the atmosphere was at near record levels due to the Industrial Revolution and subsequent developments such as the automobile and so on.  I proposed that during the age of the Dinosaurs (which is not so long ago in my opinion as most would think, but again, that’s another discussion), that those large lizards had probably produced perhaps 10 times as much methane as our modern herds of cows (and whatever other animals and sources) are capable of producing.

That then, was the stimulus for this theory in I think, and becomes the basis for the following assertion.  The assertion states that I may indeed have been correct about Dinosaurs, and since there were so many herbivorous types, that they may indeed have had something like a chambered stomach in a cow, where the raw materials were deposited and digested in a large “Fermentation Vat.”  Whether they had chambered stomachs or not, the fact remains they would have been large producers of methane gas, primarily coming out their mouths like cows as they sat around and digested their vegetable lunches.

So that becomes the first part of the theory.  The second part is similarly based on some assumptions that are a bit different from what modern “Science” assumes.  Modern science of course, as you all should know, assumes there is a separation of “millions and millions of years” between man and dinosaurs, but I, on the other hand, am inclined to believe The Bible on this, where it clearly states that man and “Dinosaurs” (large lizards perhaps?) existed at the same time (see the Book of Job).  Further, I assume that The Flood was an actual event as well, but that’s really only partly relevant for this discussion.  We know that Mastodons and Woolly Mammoths existed during the time of man, and that hunters would go out and actually kill those huge beasts.

My second assumption therefore in this discussion is that following the great flood of Noah’s time, that there were still Dinosaurs roaming the planet, and that men hunted them, either for food or to eliminate large dangerous beasts from in and around their population centers.  So now today, when men hunt large reptiles where do they go?  We go to where the reptiles live in order to catch them when they’re least active.  Men who hunt the giant snakes (the large Pythons) frequently go underground into the lairs of those huge beasts in order to catch them in their least active state (while the critters are digesting presumably).  Those critters are sitting there digesting their last meal, and are caught “napping” and the fellows can wrestle them out of their lairs rather easily, or kill them or whatever.

Men hunting Dinosaurs, or “Dragons” probably acted similarly, at least in some cases, going into underground lairs, or caves, to seek out and destroy those large animals for food, or because they were nuisances or whatever.  So, think about it now, men sought out these huge beasts, in many cases looking for them in tight spaces, in underground dwellings where these giant lizards are laying there digesting their last meal, happily (at least in some cases) producing huge clouds of methane gas as their meal digests in their stomachs.  That methane, remember, like a cow, comes burping out of their mouths quite frequently, at least in my theory it does.  So now, these men, heading underground need a light source, or have a light source with them, which is most likely a torch, right?  Think about it, you catch a sleeping giant lizard underground that’s digesting its last meal, the first thing it does when you wake it up (distub it) is what, burp?

When that “Dinosaur” burped in their faces, and they had an ignition source close by, what do you think happened?  Right!  You guessed it – FIRE!  Thus, the legend of the “Fire Breathing Dragons” has been explained by a couple of half-brained (though quite plausible) assumptions and perhaps a brand new theory for modern science to ponder.

Walk In The Light

I need to describe an incident that happened so you all will understand what it really means to “Walk in the light.”  Jesus, of course, in the Bible tells us to walk in the light (truth) so that we will have nothing false about us, so that there would be no hypocrisy in us.  But we don’t always find it so practical or convenient.

Cheryl and I took a trip recently, and we were in another city where we didn’t know the layout of the town very well, which were the good parts (safe parts) of town and which were unsafe.  It turned out our hotel, right by the airport, but on the wrong side of the airport, was also in the wrong part of town (the unsafe part).  We went out for dinner walking from our hotel, intending to walk the three or so blocks down the road to a restaurant we had seen.  As it turned out, there was a diner right next door to the hotel so we ate there instead, we just love diners!

After dinner though, we decided to walk down to the local Family Dollar, about the same three blocks as before, in fact it was in the same shopping center as the restaurant was located where we originally had intended to eat.  So, we walked down there, down the side of a major road, through a couple smaller parking lots, then through a car dealership, then into the parking lot of the shopping center which was huge.  We walked across the parking lot going to the Family Dollar, didn’t think anything of it.  However, when we got inside the Family Dollar, I began to notice we were in the wrong part of town.  I got especially alarmed when a young fellow wearing a hoodie looked right at me – sizing me up.

I tried to share my intuition with Cheryl as we were leaving the Family Dollar after checking out, letting her know I was a bit wary of this one young “Dude” I had seen.  I didn’t see him leave the Family Dollar, but knew he must have left before us, and was likely waiting there in the parking lot with his buddies.  So, we left and this time kept to the lights under the walkway of the strip mall type shopping center where the Family Dollar was located.   We walked about 100 feet before we saw a car playing rap music very loud drive by us very slowly.  They drove by and kept going however.  Then, a few feet further another car came up behind us very slowly.  Cheryl wanted to go across the parking lot, but I told her “No!  Stay in the light!”

We kept walking down the walkway under the lights of the strip mall so that we were “protected” by the lights of the stores which were mostly closed, but which were keeping us safe.  Right as the second car was passing us (again loud rap music was heard coming from the vehicle) we looked up and saw a security guard walking towards us.  Talk about an Angel when you need one!  The dudes in the car looked us over but then saw the security guard and kept going.  No, we were never sure they were going to rob us, but we were sure that we felt safer in the light, and that God had just confirmed what that really meant for us with a very practical demonstration.

Burning The Qur'an

What do you think?  Is it OK to burn copies of Islam’s supposed “Holy book?”  I say supposed because I do not believe in Islam, nor any of their teachings.  The Qur’an is filled with stories of violence, murder and teaches violent conversion.  They say it is a “Religion of peace” but my experience is it’s anything but.  Even still, do you think that carrying out NAZI style tactics (burning copies of another religion’s books) is an appropriate response to violence?  Is it a valid protest?

My answer is definitely not.   Jesus taught us to love one another.  Burning somebody else’s “Holy” book whether or not you believe it’s holy is not right.  It’s a stunt, a political stunt, one with potentially far reaching ramifications.  I would caution those at Pastor Terry Jones’ church (The Dove World Outreach Center) not to do this.

Evolution vs. Creation

It's important for all of us to think about this debate.  Whether you are a staunch Atheist, or a firm believer in Jesus Christ or anywhere else in between, you must think on this problem and apply logic and reasoning to it if you are to be able to have a coherent input into the discussion.  Personally, I try not to get tied up in arguments over time, since a day is like a 1,000 years to The Lord, and 1,000 years like a day.  In addition to that Dr. Einstein proved that time is one of those relative things, and time has different meaning for somebody on the moon than it does for somebody on planet earth.  So, how does that mean time impacts God?  I cannot answer that question except to say "Differently" (or not at all)  so I choose not to have time play a role in my argument of Creation vs. Evolution.

With that said, I do follow some of the arguments of folks such as Dr. Ron Carlson who puts it so nicely when he says that Evolution as some propose (Carl Sagan and others) is similar to a deck of playing cards dropped from a ladder.  "Oh!" you say, you get it, if Evolution is true, then when I drop those cards from that ladder, then they would quite probably line up by themselves by suit and order from Ace to King all four suits lined up one after another in a row, right?  What?  You don't think that will happen?   Then we'll just use the reasoning of the Evolutionists and climb to the top of a 10-story building and drop that deck of cards.  Now, they'll line up perfectly, right?  No?  You don't think so?  OK, then let's drop them off the Empire State Building in New York city.  Still not?  Then let's charter an airplane to take us up 10,000' and drop them from there, now they line up - right?  But you see, that is the argument of the Evolutionists, that if you just give enough "time" then everything will line up perfectly and you'll solve the equation for how life came into being.

To a thinking person, obviously there are flaws in that argument.  Time is not some "magical" variable that one can plug into an equation and have something come from nothing.  Life, by its very essence violates the Third Law of Thermodynamics:  Entropy.  Entropy is the principle that ordered systems tend towards dis-order.  In other words, things break down, decay is obvious over time.  It is a violation of Entropy to say that I can take my bicycle and bury it in my backyard for 1,000,000 years and expect to dig up a Cadillac; it just ain't gonna happen!

So, while I've jumped ahead in this discussion a little bit, I just wanted to show how important it is to think on these problems.  I spent nearly 10 years in College, actually at 4 different institutions of higher learning.  I am thankful that at least those institutions taught me to think.  I didn't learn much else really, not much practical that I use on the job every day, except how to be an Engineer.  I'm more inclined to believe though that being an Engineer is something you are either born with or learn at a very early age.  But that's another discussion isn't it?

What I really wanted to do in this article was to set out the tenets, the propositions of Evolution and either knock them down one by one, or acknowledge which of those principles there are that Christians (especially The Bible) can agree with.  I started looking at this recently and found that "Evolution" in the modern sense is not one theory, but nearly a dozen.  There are 11 in the most recent article I came across.  Let us list those quickly so we can refer to them:

1. Transmutationism - that species change form to become   other species; the alternative view is Statism

2. Common descent - that similar species have common   ancestors; the alternative is a view I can only call Parallel descent (a view held by Lamarck)

3. Struggle for existence - that more are born than   can survive; the alternate view is sometimes called Commensualism

4. Natural selection - that the relatively better adapted   have more offspring, sometimes called Malthusianism; the   alternate has no name.

5. Sexual selection - that the more "attractive"   organisms of sexual species mate more (and have more offspring),   causing unfit traits to spread; again there is no alternate,   just a denial that it happens

6. Biogeographic distribution - that species occur   close by related species, explaining the distributions of various   genera; this view, first published by Wallace, is in opposition   to the older "single centre of creation" notion.

7. Heredity -
a. Darwin's own theory was called "pangenesis"     and is no longer accepted (it was a form of what we now call     "neo-Lamarckism", or the inheritance of aquired     characters),

b. Weismannism - the more modern view that genes don't     record information about the life of organisms.

8. Random mutation - the notion that changes in genes   aren't directed towards "better" alternatives; in other   words, that mutations are blind to the needs imposed by the ecology   in which organisms find themselves

9. Genetic drift/neutralism - the view that some changes   in genes are due to chance or the so-called "sampling error"   of small populations of organisms. Molecular neutralism is the   view that the very structure of genes changes in purely random   ways.

10. Functionalism - the view that features of organisms   are neither due to or are constrained by the shapes (morphology)   of their lineage, but are due to their functional, or adaptive,   benefits.

11. Gradualism - the view that changes do not occur   all at once, and that there are intermediate steps from an earlier   stage to the next.

As said, I have borrowed that list from the article I found because it seems to be comprehensive and inclusive of all the ideas current in Evolutionary thought.  So, let's get the parts out of the way quickly that most of us Christians agree with.  I know pretty much for sure that we all agree with "Struggle for Existence" and "Survival of the Fittest" (3 & 4 above).  Most of us have personally observed these, either in movies, or in the laboratory, or in the natural world close up.  At the same time, our techniques in Animal Husbandry, and use of "selection" prove those as well, and in some sense that proves #5 (Sexual Selection) as true also.  I was struck by the fact that in the book of Genesis (Chp. 30) in the Bible, Jacob uses a sort of "selection" in his Husbandry techniques to insure that the speckled and spotted sheep mate while the non-speckled and non-spotted sheep do not get to mate, thus insuring that the "stronger" animals have more young.  The text never says whether the speckled and spotted are stronger, but since they are to become Jacob's payment for services, you can say they had more "value" if you like.

Darwin supposedly proved Biogeographic distribution with his published results on a set of finches that lived in a tree.  One species was "adapted" to live in the lower branches of the tree, another in the middle part of the tree, and another species lived in the upper part of the tree.  In our country we have numerous instances of that happening as well.  One of the most striking I can think of is in another species of birds:  The Magpies.  Specifically, there is a species known as the "Yellow Billed Magpie" that only inhabits the Central Valley in California, and the surrounding foothills, where another species the "Black Billed Magpie" is found everywhere else.  We count those as a separate species, when in reality, they could likely interbreed with one another, and the manifestation of a yellow bill on one set of birds that occupies a specific geographic region has more to do with variation and simple inheritance of recessive/dominant characteristics than it does to what Darwin's followers term "Speciation."

Another type of variation, selection and demonstration of basic inheritance is demonstrated in the domestic dog.  As long as man has had domesticated animals there have been dogs faithfully plodding along with us.  They have captured our hearts and have been given the affectionate name "Man's best friend."  However, 1,000 years ago all dogs had a general appearance of wolf-hounds.  There were no breeds such as the St. Bernard or the Chihuahua.  Today we have a myriad of breeds that all can trace their ancestry back to some common forms, and they have been selectively bred for certain characteristics that make them the breeds we know and love today.  This selective activity is similarly found in horses, cows and sheep in addition to other domestic farm animals that we all are acquainted with.

Again, these types of “selection” activity, whether natural and caused by some sort of environmental boundary or other pressure, these processes agree with the #4, and probably #5 theories (Natural Selection, Sexual Selection), but they do not in any way shape or form prove the #1 and #2 theories (Transmutationism, and Common Descent) and they probably do nothing to support theory #6 (Biogeographic Distribution).  Speciation, or the formation of new species from old ones, cannot be explained in terms of geographic boundaries, nor are any other environmental pressures likely to cause a species to give rise to a new species.  That’s simple variation, not speciation.  In order to prove Either Transmutation or Common Descent  you would be required to show that there are what Darwin referred to as “Transitionary” fossils or that one species can indeed become an entirely different species.

Now we've moved from the realm of living species to (mainly) discussing species that have become extinct, or are no longer evident as living creatures on the earth.  There are numerous examples in the fossil record of species that once roamed the planet but are no longer living species.  We are all familiar with Dinosaurs, and many of us know about Trilobytes and another Mollusk type animal known as Ammonites.  The interesting thing is that what Mr. Darwin said was that if his theories were true, and speciation was a process that moved forward over time, then there should be evidenced in the fossil record quite a number of "inter-species" or "transitionary" fossils.  These fossils would have to appear to be somewhere in between one species and another.

Likewise, since that is practically the only way you can possibly prove that Transmutationalism (theory #1 above) as well as Common Descent (theory #2 above) and in fact Gradualism (theory #11 above), it becomes obvious that since all we find in fossils are distinct species that these parts of Evolutionary thought are either not good theories (at best) or they are bad theories and cannot be proved with anything known in science.  Mr. Darwin himself said that if this part of the theory were true that there should in fact be more transitionary fossils in the geologic records than there are distinct species fossils!  There are instances of supposed "transition" fossils, but most have been shown to be fakes, or they cannot conclusively be proved to be what they are supposed to be (e.g., Dr. Leaky's "early man" fossils), and they are so few in number that they do not prove Mr. Darwin's theories.

So far, I think we can say that as Christians most of us will agree with theories #3, #4, and #5.  We can also say that Christians, at least The Bible (what Evangelicals refer to as "The Revealed Word of God") categorically disagrees with #1 and #2, #6 and also #11 above.  The Bible disagrees with those parts of the Evolutionary theories because in the book of Genesis (Chapter 1) it tells us that "God ... created them according to their kinds."  The Bible teaches that in both reference to plants and animals.  Creation teaching is directly opposed to "Convergent" evolutionary teaching.  Man did not descend from monkeys, nor did we all come from slime.  Likewise, The Bible and most thinking people would disagree with the notion that geographic differences (or other environmental pressures) can lead to formation of new species (Biogeographic Distribution).

Now, that leaves theories #7 (Heredity), #8 (Random Mutation), #9 (Genetic Drift), and #10 (Functionalism) to cover in the last part of this discussion.  As a reasonable thinking person, again, one who has spent many years in college studying the evidence, I think I can safely say that Heredity does exist.  In fact, we know now from study of Mendelian genetics that the genetic code exists and encodes all proteins and organs and structures in a life form (whether plant or animal).  That genetic code has been shown to be so complex, however, that one wonders how anyone could ever form the opinion that genetic information could spontaneously arise in some sort of "Primordial Soup" as they used to teach us in those same college classes I took?  That's a quite silly notion, and denies the very idea of divine creation.  But, that seems to be the point - those who choose to put their faith in spontaneous biogenesis are making a spiritual decision - to deny God!

That's a very profound statement, and it implies that at this point in the Evolutionary discussion, we are dividing those who believe all these theories of Evolution from those who do not believe all of them on the basis of a Religion.  Let's go back one step and deal with the rest of the theories and decide whether those have any impact on what we've just discovered.  Mutation is indeed random, as we can all attest, Cancer can be caused by random mutation, but we're not sure anything good ever comes (or has come) from random mutation.  Genetic engineering on food stuffs can take advantage of mutations to increase food yields and so on, but again, there is a tremendous amount of discussion as to whether this is a true benefit to humans, or whether people are messing with things they should not be meddling with.  But, it should be noted that mutations are demonstrable, and are real, they do exist.

Genetic Drift as a theory proposes that small populations can "drift" away from the norm.  This theory would account for geographic distribution of species leading to characteristic differences in those populations over time (such as the finches in Darwin's research detailed above, and the Yellow Billed Magpies in California also discussed above).  Those characteristic differences are in turn reflected in the genetic variation of those populations, but again, this in no way describes how one species becomes another, nor does it account for any "transitionary" fossils in the geologic record (as far as we can tell).

The last theory to deal with is Functionalism (#10).  Again, this is demonstrated again and again in science, especially in Animal Husbandry where animals are selectively bred for their perceived beneficial characteristics rather than allowing random breeding patterns.  Beneficial characteristics have many known examples:  Dairy cows bred for milk production; beef cows bred for amount and / or quality of meat; sheep bred for wool production; hogs bred for speed at which the piglets grow and mature and can be taken to market, etc...  As noted earlier, there is an example of selective breeding (Genesis 30) in The Bible where Jacob breeds his sheep for characteristics that would be economically beneficial to him.  I would argue that this also is an example of Functionalism since economic benefit is a functional characteristic.

So now we as Christians find that The Bible and we can agree with many of these principles that are contained in the modern theories of Evolution.  The place where we draw the lines are based entirely around the notion that one species becomes another (over time) and that life somehow spontaneously arose from lifelessness.  We come back now to the discussion of time, and its impact on life and other processes.  The other processes might be noted as geologic processes, climate, and so on.  Many factors on this earth have led to the dominance or extinction of various species.  It is a fact that Dinosaurs roamed this planet at one point.  The question that arises for a Biblical Scholar is whether Dinosaurs and man were here at the same time?  The Bible says that we were here at the same time (Job 40) so I believe that in fact Dinosaurs were here when man was created.

According to the evidence I have seen and read about, Dinosaurs were wiped out by a cataclysmic event.  Many other species perished around the same time, not all are noted as having been around at the same time.  But, when you examine the evidence with clear eyes, I think you too can be satisfied that Dinosaurs were wiped out by the Great Flood of The Bible.  Once you hear about Dinosaur nests found whole and intact and on the surface in the Gobi Desert in China (with fossilized eggs and all!), and then you journey to places where dinosaur bones are found such as Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado, USA, you can tell that many of these creatures were wiped out suddenly and quickly, and their carcasses were deposited into mud-filled areas such that fossilization occurred rapidly following their demise.

So, the big question arises, if we (and The Bible) can agree with some of the theories of Evolution, then how is it that Humanists and those who think they want to omit God from any scientific reality cannot agree with Creation or even recognize it as a valid theory?  As I said before, The Bible states that God created this universe and all that is in it.  In other words, all that we can see, touch, taste, and smell, anything perceptible was created by our God.  An interesting corollary to my discussion on time above is that God also created time!  If you think about it, if God exists somehow outside of time, and as we know, time is relative to physical realities, then He had to have created it and applied time as a mechanical force in this universe!  That's a pretty awesome statement.

I should note that The Bible states that God "Created the heavens and the earth in 6 days" (Genesis 1) and many who believe The Bible believe that to be a literal 6 days.  I have stated before, and will do so again, that the concept of time is not relevant to God, only to us.  As I said above, I have no desire to try to understand the implications of all of that.  In fact, when I became a Christian at the age of 34, I was already a fully mature adult, having many years of college, and possessing many questions.  But, the day I became a Christian, I stopped worrying about all those questions and simply put my faith and trust in God and His Word (The Bible).  I was satisfied that someday (when I get to Heaven) I will know the answers to all those questions (1 Corinthians 13).  There's no need to make a big deal about those issues down here on this earth, the definition of "Day" in the Bible is not a crucial question for salvation, and to me it's not really worth arguing over.

On the other hand, we know our views on Creation and the universe set us up in opposition to modern Cosmologists who refuse to admit a "Divine Principle" in the universe.  Folks like Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins choose to believe that they can write mathematical formulas for those first few picoseconds of the universe that will somehow make something come from nothing!  That's right - they think they can write a mathematical formula that has zero equal to one (0 = 1)!  I learned in Kindergarten (or pretty close to that) that you cannot do that.  So what am I saying?  Again, I am saying that the group of Scientists and Humanists who cling to their notions that all  there is somehow spontaneously came into being are basing their whole "Religion" on the idea that they can somehow magically make something appear from nothing.

When it all came down to it for me, believing in God was not so difficult at that point.  Personally, I have many other reasons to believe in a personal, loving God, one who knows me and cares about me, and who walks with me on a daily basis, but again, that's a different discussion.

Let me conclude this article by stating what we've learned, and perhaps what you have gained.  First and foremost, God set up the universe the way it is.  He created all there is, and He made it such that species of animals and plants can grow and adapt and change gradually over time.  This, however, does not make them new species.  The world is not a static place, and building in mechanisms into the reproductive processes that allow for small gradual changes within a species is a brilliant adaptive mechanism that insures survival of the fittest organisms in an (dynamic) environment.  As humans, our own ability to study and to learn about our environment, to document our findings and to build adaptations for ourselves and our dependents is a part of that same mechanism that God originally designed into this place.  Remember, Adam's first job was to "name the animals."  That was a way of categorizing the things around him in his environment, to study and to learn!  I would propose that is one of our primary purposes on this earth:  To learn and to study!

But, an even higher purpose than that is to Love God and worship Him, because He gave us all that we have.  The Bible has no disagreement with good science, but it does call "Fools" those who say there is no God (Psalm 14:1, 53:1, Romans 1:21-23).  I call them fools too, because at the root of their so-called science, they are trying to prove something that violates the most basic mathematical and scientific principle:  That you cannot get something from nothing.

I pray that you, the reader of this article may benefit from what I've said here.  I pray further that you may be blessed this day and that you may Know the living God Jesus Christ in all His glory.  He is alive, and He wants to know you!  Please feel free to make comments on this article, this is a discussion and I invite you to participate.

The "Me First" Society

Welcome to America!  Land of the free, home of the brave.  Freedom reigns here, but that freedom was not free.  Somehow though, in the past 100 years or so, our society has shifted from a society of people that prize their freedom to a collection of individuals who seek "Success."  There are strong personalities everywhere and those people are not just leaders, they are dominators.  What do I mean by that you might ask?  Let me explain it as best I can in light of history and culture.

As our country moved from a loose collection of states to a conquering powerful nation with a strong central government, we naturally tended to look up to and follow strong individuals.  This quality of “fierce independence” was somehow seen as a positive thing, a quality to be admired.  That attitude was equated with the ideals of freedom and the “American way.”  It not only became synonymous with freedom but also with justice and truth.  Those who were strong were deemed to be successful (and vice-versa).  When Charles Darwin came along with his theory of evolution and “Survival of the fittest” many leaders quickly subscribed themselves to that theory in order to prove the natural order of one human dominating another.

In the mid-19th century, the Imperialists in England and most other European countries, and even in the United States, grabbed a hold of Mr. Darwin’s ideas to assert their “rights” to dominate in Asia, Africa and other parts of the world that lived in supposed “Darkness.”  There had always been slavery, but now there was a theory that explained why one race should be able to rule over another.  The British went so far in their desire to subjugate the Chinese population that they introduced Opium – in mass quantities – into the country.  Entire shiploads of Opium were brought in and Tea was shipped out.  Obviously this proves that one way to keep a population under control is to drug them.

So how did this all play out and lead to what we have today in our “Me First” society?  What exactly is a “Me First” society?  This country was founded on the principles that government exists to serve the people – not special interests.  Special interest groups have been around in this country since before the Civil War.  But, following the Civil War, however, many groups that represented powerful industrial groups in the North, and others who represented “expansionists” determined they would have a say in Congress.  They started having a profound influence in political campaigns.  Advertising wasn’t born then, but it started to be refined into an engine that would sharply influence public opinions.  Advertisers, and academics it should be said, found subtle ways that they could influence the opinion of the masses.  Thus was born the science of psychology.  It wasn’t really born then of course either, but it started to be used heavily because advertisers realized the value of “intelligent” advertising that would earn them real money in return.  Money is power in politics after all.

So, we have the birth of the “Madison Avenue” section of our society that gives rise to the concept that advertising can be used to influence not just purchasing decisions, but decisions relating to the running of our government (real power).  Large sums of money began to be spent on political campaigns.  People are swayed with these notions that a powerful person, a “Leader” is good for the country.  Personality and leadership started to become more important in public opinion than did the welfare of society as a whole.  “Getting ahead,” being “successful” started to be worshiped as more to be sought after than the simple life and simple pleasures (for example, raising a family, sitting at home around the fireplace engaging in family activities and so on).

These things all occurred in our society about the same time our population was shifting from agrarian (agricultural) to urban.  Perhaps the two shifts are related more than we know, perhaps one naturally occurred as a result of the other.  I have heard and seen that in Europe, they have a hard time now keeping young people in the country.  All the youth want to go to the “City” where life is viewed as being “exciting” and there are jobs and so forth.  Nobody wants to stick around and run the family business or farm and be where life is “boring.”  Thus, one set of ideas naturally seemed to influence another set of ideas entirely.  Now life itself is not even viewed as “normal” if there is no large crowd of people around you who all are seeking some mythical notion of “success.”

Does success really mean life in the city with fast cars and a zillion restaurants and bars around to choose from?  Is it really all about excitement and over-stimulating our senses?  Is life really just some hedonistic journey where we should do our best to get the most out of whatever and wherever we are?  Let me give you a more personal example.  I took a cruise with my wife and mother and sister and brother-in-law a couple years back.  It was a cruise to honor my mother’s 80th birthday.  We got on a ship in Rome and cruised around the Eastern Mediterranean.  While it was quite an enjoyable cruise, I found there was just something bothering me about it the entire time we were on the ship.  When I got off the ship at the end of the cruise I realized what it was:  We were on this “whirlwind” tour of cities and countries trying to see all we could as quickly as we could because the cruise only had so many days in it (obviously).

But, what I realized about all that – because some people may enjoy that kind of travel – is that it’s simply not for me.  I prefer the “Rick Steves’” style of travel, what he calls “Back door travel.”  What he means by that is moving a bit slower, seeking out quiet places to rest and restore sanity and to get to know people from different cultures.  We should be actively looking for places that not only stimulate our senses, but soothe us and allow us to meet new and interesting  people as well.  That kind of travel is something that seems to be lost on our generation, and again, I would argue that the reason why is because most folks out there these days just want as much as they can get in as short a time period as possible.  After all – that’s getting the most for your money isn’t it?

That’s what I mean when I say we live in a “Me First” society.  That attitude not only pervades how people vacation in our society, it pervades all of our society.  We are bombarded by that message in advertising – constantly.  We are told that you need to get all you can or you’re not a “success.”  Why on earth do you think we have so many banking executives of failed banks voting themselves bonuses?  They really don’t care about anyone else, they only care about themselves and what they can get out of their “position.”  That’s why they’re in that position to begin with isn’t it?  I equate it to the greed and corruption we all of us have seen in most Corporations, and this is not just in America mind you, but worldwide.

While much of Asia is not suffering any longer in terms of being dominated by the Western powers, Asia is consumed by this same “Me First” attitude.  Even China, Communist China is flooded with this attitude!  The leaders in China are jealous of their power, and guard it carefully.  They care nothing for the average people, or workers.  A couple years back when this latest financial turnaround hit China, they closed 20,000 factories and laid off 20,000,000 (that’s 20 MILLION) workers.  Those workers were told to “Head for the hills and farm or die.”  They and their families were forced to flee the cities and head out to find work on farms, or start their own farms.  There were no jobs for them, no government assistance, no unemployment insurance.  Pretty harsh, eh?

We have it somewhat better in this country in that we have some sort of unemployment program going for those who lose their jobs.  But, does that address the reason those jobs were lost to begin with?  Are we ever going to see any large numbers of people go to jail as a result of the investigations into the “Sub-prime” crisis?  Has anybody gone to jail yet?  Only a relatively few persons have even been indicted on criminal charges stemming from investigations into corrupt practices in lending, or buying and selling of mortgages.

Our “Me First” society really doesn’t want to pursue those guys and send them to jail.  The ones with all the money and power in this country are just as culpable and they don’t want anyone to get arrested, since if one of them is guilty, they all are guilty.  The legislation of “Everybody should own a home” goes back to Bill Clinton.  It’s not a Republican idea, rather it stems from the Democrat / Liberal notion of “Happy Family” in that everyone deserves to be happy and own a home.  I’ve never seen in the Declaration of Independence or Constitution that home ownership is guaranteed.  Oh well, that’s beside the point – right?  In a “Me First” society home ownership _should_ be guaranteed by the government, and that, in reality is where the “pressure” came from to give homes away to people who really didn’t deserve them or couldn’t afford them.

My real question is whether or not giving away homes to everyone is any different from the British drugging the Chinese people with Opium?  Is the desired end result the same?  Do they just want a large pacified population who are satisfied they have been cared for?  Is it really different from a thrifty working class who realize that home ownership is an “ideal” and is something to be worked for, but who are not necessarily all home owners?  There must be a balance in there somewhere otherwise it all makes no sense.

What’s really happened in our society I think is that we have shifted towards this notion of “I deserve it” or what is commonly called “The Entitlement Mentality.”  This is the heart of the “Me First” attitude and the real crux of the problem.  Our advertising folks on Madison Ave. have played that notion up and beat it like a drum.  It’s the number one message you hear in advertising these days.  It also is evidenced in our “Post Modern” notions of “New and improved.”  Every product out there has to undergo a periodic renewal and / or update.  Cars are probably the best example we think of when we consider this notion of every model year is better than the previous.  You have to upgrade and update in order to have those newest features, the latest innovations, the best and so forth.  That “Planned obsolescence” idea carries over into almost everything we buy, such that we live in this “disposable” society now where things are not made to last, rather they wear out and you replace them.  Very few things are repaired any more, things are just not made to last.

But there again, that fits well with our “Me First” society that wants to constantly be updated to the latest and greatest of whatever it is out there to be had.  Jesus’ idea that you should love others and deny yourself doesn’t fit with the “Me First” society at all.  The way I look at it, love is a verb in Jesus’ usage.  Love is not a feeling, something you seek after.  You cannot “find” love in a bar, or a restaurant, or a car, or any place at all.  Love is not something you experience, it is something you do.  That doesn’t mesh with our “Me First” notions of “You deserve it.”  Thus, I would count that as the number one reason in our society why Christians are viewed as “Out there” or crazy or whatever.  The social ideas of society have turned upside down and we no longer live in a society that seeks to promote the welfare of others over ourselves, and so Christian teachings are viewed as flawed.

In fact, it is not Christianity that is the problem.  Sin is the problem – same as it always has been.  Our enemy, Satan, is around parading with his same set of lies:  “Did God really say you don’t deserve that?”  Of course God didn’t say that, all God said was that we should seek the welfare of society as a whole, and not put self-serving notions ahead of loving others.  Unfortunately, what has happened is that as I said above, success is viewed in this country as on a par with freedom, and therefore is highly valued.  Success, the never-ending pursuit of hedonistic pleasures and power is put above serving the public interest.  Government exists not to serve the people but instead it serves that same idea of “success” but instead the success of large institutions (represented by special interest groups).  Because, it is argued, the success of large institutions naturally derives success for individuals on a large scale – right?  That whole argument is flawed however, because as we know, institutions are mostly run by people who generally only care about and serve themselves.

Our government has failed us.  Our government no longer exists to serve the good of the people.  Our government has been invaded by the notion of the “Me First” society.  The whole “Me First” notion serves to elevate the “success” of the few at the expense of the many.  This more than any other problem in our country is the basic hypocrisy that our young people realize and thus feel hopeless.  This more than anything else – in my opinion – leads to rampant drug use and teen suicides and violence and so forth.  If our youth look around them and think “What’s the point?”  Then why should they even try to be part of this society?  Why should they even struggle?

We have work to do people.  We must take our government back and make it work for THE PEOPLE!  We have to take it back and make it work for all the people!  We have to instill again the sense of values that will give our young people, our treasure, hope.  Not President Obama’s idea of hope and change, I’m talking about real hope and real change.  The kind of hope that comes from a risen Savior, one who cares so much about us that He died for us on the cross at Calvary.  That’s the kind of hope I’m talking about!

Atomic Apology?

I don’t think so! People are subject these days to lots of revisionist rhetoric. The Japanese people in particular have never heard much of the truth about WWII, the atrocities committed in China, and their treatment of POW’s during the war. The facts are that most who surrendered to the Japanese didn’t survive. Many were executed outright and were never given anything like treatment accorded at the Convention of Geneva (1931). Now, on the anniversary of the atomic bomb blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for the first time the United States is sending an envoy, and the Japanese expect an apology!

That’s just too much to stomach. They have never done the math to consider how many lives were saved by the use of atomic weapons to end the war. American estimates on casualties – for the allies – were anywhere from 500,000 to 1,000,000 killed, wounded, etc… There were never any estimates published for how many Japanese would have been killed had we invaded, but given the roughly 3:1 casualty ratio for Japanese to allies on the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, a suitable estimate would easily have been millions of casualties for the Japanese if an invasion of the main islands had occurred.

So, let’s do the math and figure it out, roughly 200,000 folks lost their lives in the atomic bomb blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were given warning – don’t forget that, we did warn them. The Japanese command chose not to pass the warnings along to the population, preferring not to for their own insane reasons. Then, perhaps half as many folks died during the ensuing years from radiation sickness, from wounds, etc… So, about 300,000 folks perished as a result of the atomic blasts.

The effect of the blasts was what the allies had hoped – the Japanese realized the futility of further struggle, and Emperor Hirohito ordered his people to surrender. We had been hoping for unconditional surrender, and we gave the Japanese actually a concession: Emperor Hirohito was allowed to continue as Emperor! Was that magnanimous or what?

Now, for a look at the casualty figures: The allies saved nearly a million casualties, and the Japanese easily as many as 2-3 million due to the atomic blasts ending the war. They suffered a total of around 300,000 casualties. My math says that we saved somewhere from 2.5 million to 3.5 million, (probably more like 10-20 million since the Japanese population was being trained to resist the invaders with pitchforks and hoes!) casualties by dropping the atomic bomb on Japan.

Now, just because some of the scientists in the Manhattan Project had a “conscience” and were worried about being part of killing, does that mean that we should take part in revising history, apologize to the Japanese and say that we were wrong to use atomic weapons? I don’t think so!

You all think about that and let me know what you come up with!

Do you think President Obama will bow down to the Japanese and offer this apology?

Vote!

OK, so voting is a drag. You get to vote for a bad or a worse candidate sometimes. It seems like Washington doesn’t care anymore, and they certainly aren’t in touch with reality. All of the Senators in office are millionaires, so how can they possibly give a rat’s rear end about those of us on the bottom side of this recession?

I’m not going to rattle off a big rant here, what I want to do is to remind us that there is still an answer today that’s as good as it was 2,000 years ago: Jesus. Jesus is the answer, because He always provides, He always cares. He can give us what we need, not maybe what we want, but we’ll always have our daily bread and clothing to wear if we trust in and follow Him. No, He doesn’t do it for us, but He does line things up so that they happen and we have those basic needs met.

People always forget that this life is as much spiritual as it is emotional and physical. Perhaps it’s even more spiritual. Folks think that just because they cannot see the spiritual side of life that it doesn’t matter. That’s where Hedonism comes from, a complete disavowal of anything spiritual and a turning to pure physical and emotional pleasures. I would class many types of “isms” in our modern society as Hedonism, including those who try to “get ahead” or get to the top of the heap. Especially those at the top who do everything they can to stay ahead and at the top, and to keep others down.

I’ve said before how criminal are some business practices in this country. There used to be a couple rules in business: “Treat your employees like gold and pay them like dirt, or pay them like gold and treat them like dirt.” But, those don’t seem to apply any longer. These days, business wants to pay them like dirt and treat them like dirt. I could rattle off numerous examples of this philosophy, but I won’t because I don’t want to waste space. We’ve all seen the declining salaries for folks since 9/11, and we know how many of us are out of work. Most have little hope of ever making it back into the workplace doing what they were doing previously.

So, if life is a spiritual battle, then how does this all apply, and why should I vote?

My answer to the $64 question is that our leaders can determine a lot about the attitude of our elected officials. There is a “trickle down” effect that is worth fighting for in other words. Take my own reasoning on this for example. I am a Jesus Freak. I follow Jesus – period. That means, that by definition, I believe the Bible, and consider it to be the “truth” and irrefutable. Thus, I follow what it says to do. It says we shall not kill, and especially, we should not sacrifice our babies. Now, I grant you that before I became a Christian, I had a girlfriend who had an abortion, but now I know that what we did was wrong. What I did was tantamount to murder, and I’ve asked The Lord’s forgiveness on that account.

But today, because I know abortion is wrong, and abortion, or “Choice” is one of the pillars of the Democratic party, then I can never vote for a Democratic candidate in any election. That’s what I mean when I say that sometimes there are bad candidates (Republicans who aren’t very qualified) and worse (Democrats). I can never vote for the worse candidates no matter what. I will never again consciously vote for a person who advocates sacrificing babies on the altar of “Choice.” And, I will always get out and vote, at least for the candidates who aren’t Democrats. Don’t get me wrong on that score either though, I voted for Ross Perot twice. I considered him to be the best candidate who ever ran for President in my lifetime. He just wasn’t a politician and couldn’t play the dirty game like the rest of them.

By the way, those who voted for President Obama because they wanted and now expect change, how’s this for a statistic: There were 22 bank failures last month – that’s the most for any single month in the past 10 years (it ties last July, when there were also 22 bank failures)! How’s that for “Change?” You and your Democrat liberal cronies can keep that kind of change Mr. President!

Passing The Buck

As humans, we have a tendency to place blame for our problems on others. Most often this tendency is responsible for people getting “stuck” in their issues because they refuse to admit their own faults. At the extreme, this tendency could be seen as a cause of genocides. Hitler was adamant that the Jews were responsible for Germany’s failure in WWI, and for Germany as a whole to recover from the disastrous effects of the Treaty of Versailles. One can also see this tendency in other genocides such as in Rwanda in 1994.

I just finished reading a book called _At Dawn We Slept_ by Gordon Prangue. In it is described the desperate struggle by the commanders on the spot (in Pearl Harbor) to shift the blame to Washington. They argued vehemently that they had been denied critical intelligence from Washington that would have made a difference in their disposition and attitude of available forces. The author finds that argument inadequate because the duty of a commander is to always be ready for any possible contingency, and certainly the Japanese were the whole reason for the Pacific Fleet being in Hawaii to begin with!

While most of our blunders and blame shifting don’t cost so much in terms of blood or tears as these examples, it certainly must be recognized that any attempt on any of our parts to “Pass the buck” results in equally lame sounding arguments. Accepting responsibility for one’s actions means that there is an honest accounting and attempt to correct the situation. No matter what it takes. Jesus said you must “Deny yourself, and take up your cross daily” (my own paraphrase from Luke 9:23-24). Self-denial is at the heart of “Not” passing the buck.

Taking responsibility for my own actions is not self-flagellation, but is a reckoning that seeks to correct wrongs and make myself more like Jesus. At the heart of it all, love is not a feeling but a verb. I “Love others” by protecting them from myself, my own ego, my own short-comings, my tendency to avert blame. I take actions that will be beneficial to them and to others, rather than serve my own appetites. It takes courage, and faith, and reliance upon The Holy Spirit to keep me on the right road. At the end of it all, I cannot do it alone, but must be in contact and connection with a body of believers. That’s the only way I can avoid passing the buck.
